Youtuber Mukbang Tzuyang (Park Jung Won) should appear before the National Assembly of South Korea as a witness during the next audit session, in order to claim more strict measures against the “Cyber Wreckers”, a term designating online channels that exploit and distribute false information or sensationalist content for lucrative purposes.
On September 22, the Science, ICT, Radiation and Communications Commission (SICT) announced that a motion to summon Tzuyang and its lawyer Kim Tae Yeon, would be subject to the vote at the general meeting of 24. If it is approved, Tzuyang will officially testify on October 14.
As a reminder, Tzuyang had been the victim in 2023 of a very publicized extortion case. Several Youtubers, including Gu Jae Yeok (Lee Jun Hee) and Jujak Gambyulsa (Jeon Guk Jin), had threatened him to disseminate false accusations concerning his private life and an alleged tax fraud, unless she pays them money. Under pressure, the content designer had ended up yielding 55 million won (around 35,000 euros). The culprits have since been condemned:
– Gu Jae Yeok received 3 years in prison (a sentence confirmed on appeal).
– Jujak Gambyulsa was sentenced to 1 year in suspended prison for 3 years.
– Karakyulla and crocodile accomplices have respectively received a suspended sentence and a fine.
Lawyer Kim Tae Yeon explained:
“It is a difficult position to take, especially in view of the personal distress of Tzuyang. But we decided to express ourselves to avoid other victims and highlight the systemic problems that allow these abuses. »»
For his part, the deputy Kim Jang Kyum (People Power Party), at the origin of the request for convocation, stressed the importance of this testimony:
“We want to show the severity of cyber wreckers activities and question platforms like YouTube on the measures really put in place to protect the victims. We will also examine whether these platforms have not closed their eyes out of financial interest and for the audience. »»
Tzuyang’s decision is largely praised as a courageous gesture, intended to defend better protection against digital abuses and the extortion of content in a high -changing Korean media landscape.
