Supreme Court Finalizes Sentences For Kim Chang Hwan And Moon Young Il In The East Light Abuse Case

The appeals made by Media Line Entertainment CEO Kim Chang Hwan and Media Line Entertainment producer Moon Young Il were dismissed by the court.

On March 26, the Supreme Court finalized Kim Chang Hwan’s original sentence of eight months in prison, suspended for two years of probation, for aiding and abetting child abuse. They also confirmed Moon Young Il’s sentence of one year and four months.

In July 2019, Moon Young Il was sentenced to prison on charges of habitual child abuse of former The East Light members Lee Seok Cheol and Lee Seung Hyun. Kim Chang Hwan was also sentenced for aiding and abetting the abuse and emotionally abusing Lee Seung Hyun by forcing him to accept electronic cigarettes and hitting him on the head.

Both the prosecution and the defendants appealed the original sentence, setting off a new round of appeal hearings. In December 2019, the appeal court gave their verdict, dismissing both the appeal from the prosecution to toughen the sentence and Kim Chang Hwan’s appeal to lighten his sentence. The appeal court, however, reduced Moon Young Il’s sentence to one year and four months. Following the first appeal hearings, both Kim Chang Hwan and Moon Young Il filed a second appeal, the final appeal that is permitted, on their sentences to the Supreme Court, and it has now been dismissed.
