South Korean football star Son Heung Min has become entangled in a blackmail case involving a woman who allegedly threatened to expose her pregnancy in exchange for money. According to police reports, the Tottenham Hotspur forward submitted a written statement to Gangnam Police Station last week, shedding light on his side of the story.
The woman at the center of the case — identified only by her surname, Yang — is in her 20s. She, along with a man in his 40s surnamed Yong, is facing allegations of blackmail. Son claims the two conspired to pressure him for financial compensation after Yang revealed she was pregnant.
In his statement, Son detailed the timeline of events, saying he returned to Korea on May 23 last year to prepare for the second round of the World Cup qualifiers. He admitted to meeting with Yang on May 31 and June 1, just before departing for an away match in Singapore on June 2. This marks the only known meeting between the two.
Son’s side claims that about a month later, Yang contacted him with news of her pregnancy. He allegedly suggested a face-to-face conversation to resolve the matter, but was met with a demand for money instead. According to Son, Yang refused to meet in person and continued to push for financial compensation.
Despite the serious nature of the claims, police have stated there are no current plans to summon Son for an in-person investigation. Instead, authorities are focusing on whether Yang and Yong colluded in the alleged extortion attempt. Once that investigation is complete, the case will be handed over to prosecutors.
