The success of “Parasite” is showing no signs of slowing down!
After previously becoming the first Korean film in 15 years to top the Japanese box office, Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” has now officially taken over as the most commercially successfully Korean movie in Japan. At the time it topped the box office, it was recorded to be the third most successful.
CJ ENM revealed that as of March 8, the sales of “Parasite” in Japan totaled $4 billion yen (approximately $39.6 million). This catapults “Parasite” over the 2005 film “A Moment to Remember,” which recorded $3 billion yen (approximately $29.4 million), as the top Korean film in Japan.
“Parasite” was initially released in Japan on December 27, 2019, where it reached No. 5 at the box office. After the film swept the Academy Awards in early February, the film saw a steady rise, hitting No. 3 in Japan before finally topping the chart.
The film has also become the most successful foreign film in the United Kingdom. Between its UK release on February 7 and March 6, “Parasite” accumulated $11.1 million pounds (approximately $14.5 million). In North America, it recorded $52.8 million. This makes “Parasite” the fourth highest-grossing foreign film in North America behind “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Life Is Beautiful,” and “Hero.” Globally, “Parasite” has grossed over $245.9 billion, and the total is continuing to grow each day!
