The mysterious disappearance of Ban Hee Soo, NewJeans’ “hidden sixth member,” has left fans puzzled.
Ban Hee Soo, although a fictional character, played a significant role in capturing the group’s daily life and fostering a close bond between the group and its fans. Ban Hee Soo was a character who was a representation of the group and their fans. Through Ban Hee Soo’s perspective, fans could experience NewJeans more intimately, creating an emotional bridge between them and the idols.
However, Ban Hee Soo vanished overnight, and all related videos were suddenly removed. This disappearance raises two important questions: Who deleted Ban Hee Soo’s content, and why?
Shin Woo Seok, the head of Dolphiners Films, which created the Ban Hee Soo videos, was the first to be suspected. Shin Woo Seok had access to the account and could delete the content but claims it wasn’t his decision.
According to him, ADOR, NewJeans’ agency, requested the deletion due to copyright concerns. ADOR holds the copyright to NewJeans’ content and therefore has the authority to decide whether to delete or keep related videos.
ADOR, however, refuted this, stating that they only requested the removal of a specific “ETA” director’s cut video posted on Dolphiners Film’s channel without proper approval and had nothing to do with the Ban Hee Soo channel. ADOR claimed that they never asked for the deletion of Ban Hee Soo’s videos and were wrongfully blamed.
Nevertheless, Shin Woo Seok explained that ADOR told him that any video containing NewJeans’ copyrighted material could only be uploaded to official channels and that no third-party channels could host such videos. Shin Woo Seok interpreted this broadly to include the Ban Hee Soo videos.
This issue appears to stem from a communication breakdown. While ADOR cited copyright concerns, Shin Woo Seok interpreted it as a broader directive to remove all related content. As a result, the Ban Hee Soo channel was wiped clean.
The whole incident seems to be a misunderstanding on both sides. Clearer guidelines or a more careful review of the deletion request could have preserved Ban Hee Soo’s content, which was cherished by NewJeans fans for its nostalgic and personal connection to the group. Although ADOR plans to re-upload the videos, the original versions have already been lost, damaging the emotional connection that fans had with NewJeans through Ban Hee Soo’s unique lens.
