aespa Winter Reveals She Almost Didn’t Sign With SM Entertainment — Here’s Why

Winter almost missed debuting with aespa! The idol has confessed she almost didn’t sign with SM Entertainment.

During a recent livestream, Winter revealed she almost signed with a different company. As most fans know, Winter was originally street cast during a school festival. However, being cast doesn’t automatically make someone a trainee. They have to go through private auditions before being officially signed.

It appears that at one point, her future with SM Entertainment was not set in stone. The agency appeared hesitant to sign her as they were unsure if she would be a good fit with the agency. Seeing this, Winter auditioned at other companies and had actually received an offer from an agency.

Though she did not name what company she nearly signed with, she stated she had given them a verbal agreement that she would train under them. However, she had maintained a good relationship with her casting agent at SM Entertainment and decided to inform them that she was being offered a contract before officially signing.

Hearing this, the casting agent at SM Entertainment asked for one more meeting. Winter showed off how much she had improved, and the company offered to sign her. In the end, Winter chose to train under SM Entertainment.

Speaking about the experience, the idol stated,

“I actually received an offer from another company. Although I can’t reveal the name, we were just about to finalize the contract. We had already agreed to sign. However, I had maintained a good relationship with the SM Entertainment staff who had initially cast me, so I informed them that I was likely going to sign with the other label. They requested to see me before I committed to the other contract. Right before I was about to sign, I thought to myself, if it works out with SM Entertainment, great; if not, then it’s okay. The period between my last meeting with SM Entertainment and the signing was very short. During that time, I managed to show how much I improved to the SM Entertainment staff. Surprisingly, they asked me to try training with them, and that’s how I ended up joining SM Entertainment.”
