He was one of the main culprits.
A major K-Pop IP company is facing intense criticism for hiring one of the perpetrators involved in the “Burning Sun” scandal in a major executive role.
On September 24, KST, the IP company Muse M announced that they had appointed Huh Hyun, a former YG Entertainment executive, as the head of their global operations and the head of their China office. Huh, who is a Fudan University graduate, was previously in charge of BIGBANG’s management in China.
Huh Hyun was also a known member of the infamous “Burning Sun” group chat along with disgraced celebrities Jung Joon Young and Choi Jong Hoon. The group chat victimized multiple women with horrible sex crimes. In 2019, Heo was convicted of sexual assault and received eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
According to court documents, in March 2016, Heo travelled to Daegu with Jung and Choi after a fan singing event, and later that evening, the group met some women at a nightclub and sexually assaulted them in a hotel. Heo had appealed his original sentencing, but the higher courts upheld it, and the verdict was finalized by the Supreme Court.
Despite his criminal past, Muse M emphasized that Huh’s conviction was unrelated to the job role he was appointed to. The man himself also made a statement saying he wanted to help Muse M grow into a unicorn company through K-Pop. However, industry insiders believe that Huh’s appointment is a recipe for disaster for the company.
As a leading IP company, Muse M has worked with the likes of ASTRO’s Eunwoo, BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, and BIGBANG’s G-Dragon. Industry experts feel that after Huh’s appointment, no major K-Pop artist or agency would entrust their IP to a company that has been tied to the Burning Sun scandal.
Huh Hyun’s appointment has once again highlighted the sustaining issue of powerful men in the entertainment industry getting away with sexual crimes after barely facing any legal consequences for their actions.
